The latest National Statistics on new house building and social housing sales produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 8th July according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website Statistics on both the number of new dwellings, started and completed, and the number of social housing sales include data for Wales for the period October to December 2009 and January to March 2010.

The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 20th April 2010. The information on new house building is based on the reports of local authority building inspectors and the National House Building Council (NHBC). It does not include information from private approved inspectors.

Dwelling stock

  • At the 31st March 2009, there were 1.34 million dwellings in Wales. Between 1st April 2009 and 31st March 2010, 6,174 additional dwellings were built and a total of 375 social housing dwellings were sold, therefore becoming private sector dwellings.

New House Building

  • Whilst the number of new dwellings completed continues to fall (a decrease of 13 per cent during 2009-10 compared with the previous year), the number of new dwellings started have increased, with 5,307 new dwellings started during 2009-10, an increase of 8 per cent on 2007-08.

Social Housing Sales

  • Overall, sales of social housing continue to fall, though this trend has levelled off slightly. During 2009-10, only 375 dwellings were sold, which is 6 per cent less than the previous year. The majority sold were Registered Social Landlord dwellings.
