The latest National Statistics on homelessness produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 22nd September according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics on homelessness include data for Wales for the period April to June 2010. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 15th July 2010.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • In general, the number of households accepted as homeless have fallen since the end of 2004-05. During the April to June 2010 quarter there were 1,467 households accepted as homeless by local authorities, which was relatively unchanged from the previous quarter but up by 10 per cent on the same quarter a year earlier.
  • Following a peak in mid 2005, the use of temporary accommodation has generally been falling.  There were 2,558 households in temporary accommodation at the end of June 2010, down 7 per cent compared with June 2009.
  • The use of B&B accommodation has generally been falling since the end of 2004, however latest figures show that this trend is levelling off slightly. By the end of June 2010, there were 223 households in bed and breakfast accommodation, which is down by 19 per cent since June 2009.
  • The number of families with children in Bed and Breakfast accommodation has increased slightly during the quarter. At the end of June 2010 they accounted for 7 per cent of all households in B&B accommodation, compared with 5 per cent a year earlier.
