The latest Dwelling Stock Estimates produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 26th January 2011, according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

This statistical release present s estimates of dwelling stock numbers in Wales by tenure and local authority as at 31 March 2010.  The latest release updates the statistics previously published on 1st April 2010.

Key results for 2009-10 show:

  • The total number of dwellings in Wales at 31 March 2010 was estimated to be 1.34 million which represents an increase of 8 per cent since 1996-97.
  • At 31 March 2010 the majority of dwelling stock, 70 per cent, was owner occupied(1). A further 14 per cent was privately rented, 8 per cent was rented from local authorities and 8 per cent was rented from registered social landlords.
  • In the private sector, the largest increase since 1996-97 has been in privately rented dwellings with numbers more than doubling and the proportion increasing from 7 to 14 per cent of all stock by 31 March 2010. The proportion of owner–occupied stock dropped by 3 percentage points over this period, though numbers did increase from around 909,000 to 941,000.
  • In the social sector whilst the number of dwellings rented from local authorities has fallen by almost a half since 1996-97, the number rented from registered social landlords has more than doubled over the same period. This has been predominantly influenced by the large scale voluntary transfers of stock from local authorities to RSLs.

(1) Includes intermediate tenures and other tenures not socially or privately rented.
