The latest National Statistics on Household Estimates produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 17 February 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website Statistics on Household Estimates include data for Wales for the period 1991 to 2009. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 18 August 2009.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • The estimated number of households in Wales grew from around 1.1 million in 1991 to nearly 1.3 million by 2009. The overall increase was over 190,000 households or 18 per cent. On average, this is an annual increase of just under 1 per cent.
  • Between 1991 and 2009, the estimated number of households increased for all local authorities in Wales. Estimated increases range from 5 per cent in Merthyr Tydfil, to 26 per cent in Powys.
  • The estimated private household population for Wales grew from around 2.8 million in 1991 to nearly 3.0 million by 2009. The overall increase was over 152,000 households or 5 per cent.
  • The average household size in Wales decreased from 2.52 to 2.26 persons per household by 2009.
  • The number of one person households increased by 128,000 or 45 per cent between 1991 and 2009. As a proportion, the number of one person households increased from 25 per cent of all households in 1991, to 31 per cent in 2009.
