The latest revised National Statistics on Housing Demolitions and Hazards produced by the Welsh Government were released on 24 August 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website Statistics on Housing Demolitions and Hazards in Wales include data for the financial year 2010-11. This latest release updates the statistics previously released on 25 August 2010.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • The number of dwellings demolished in Wales has generally declined since peaking in 2001-02. Since 2004-05, the number of dwellings demolished has fluctuated with no real consistency; although more recently figures have been increasing. The 2010-11 figure increased to 294, its highest since 2003-04.
  • During 2010-11, 6,824 dwellings across Wales were assessed by local authorities under the Housing Health and Safety Rating System, of which 2,049 (30 per cent) were houses in multiple occupation (HMOs).
  • Following assessment, 35 per cent of HMOs were found to contain Category 1 hazards compared to 52 per cent of non-HMOs. In contrast, a higher percentage of HMOs had Category 2 hazards than non-HMOs (53 per cent compared to 41 per cent respectively).
  • As in previous years, the most common Category 1 hazard for non-HMOs was ‘Excess Cold’ which accounted for 47 per cent of all Category 1 hazards found in 2010-11. This is an increase of 17 percentage points from the previous year.
  • During 2010-11, ‘Excess Cold’ and ‘Fire’ were the most common Category 1 hazards for HMOs, each accounting for 33 per cent of all identified hazards.
  • The number of licensed HMOs across Wales has been steadily increasing since 2006-07. At 31 March 2011, there were 4,167 licensed HMOs, of which, half were mandatory licences and half were additional licences.
