The latest National Statistics on Social Housing Stock, Lettings and Vacancies produced by the Welsh Government were released on 16 November 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website This Statistical Release presents information on stock held by local authorities and registered social landlords as at 31 March 2011, as well as information on the number of vacancies and lettings.

This latest release updates the statistics previously released on 17 November 2010.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • There continues to be a slight increase in social housing stock, with 236,312 social landlord dwellings, bedsits and bedspaces (i.e. housing units) in Wales at 31 March 2011. Since March 2010 social housing stock increased by 0.7 per cent whilst the rate of social housing remained unchanged at 17.9 units per 100 households).
  • At 31 March 2011, 62 per cent of all social housing stock was owned by RSLs mainly due to further large scale voluntary transfers of stock from local authorities to RSLs during the year. By 31 March 2011 RSL owned all social housing in half of the authorities across Wales.
  • Both the number of vacant housing units and the proportion of vacant social housing stock have fallen over recent years. At the 31 March 2011, 3,585 (1.6 per cent) social housing units were vacant of which over a quarter (29 per cent) had been empty for more than 6 months.
  • During 2010-11, there were 22,327 new lettings of social housing stock. The majority (58 per cent) of these continued to be via housing waiting lists, with a further 18 per cent via priority lettings to homeless households.
