The latest revised National Statistics on homelessness produced by the Welsh Government were released on 20th December 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics on homelessness include data for Wales for the period April to June 2011 and July to September 2011.

The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 22nd June 2011.

Household acceptances

  • In general, the number of households accepted as homeless fell from the peak in 2004-05 through to the end of 2009 but have since been increasing. During the July to September quarter 2011 a total of 1,845 households were accepted as homeless which is up by 15 per cent on the same quarter of 2010 and up by 25 per cent on the on the same quarter of 2009.

Households in Temporary Accommodation

  • In general, the use of temporary accommodation has been falling since 2005-06, although numbers have increased since December 2009 as a consequence of the increase in acceptances. At the end of September 2011, there were 2,695 households in temporary accommodation, an increase of 2 per cent on September 2010.
  • Following a period of stability, at the end of September 2011 there were 270 households in bed and breakfast accommodation, an increase of 29 per cent on the same period last year. Of these, households containing children also increased accounting for 7 per cent (20 households) of all households in bed and breakfast accommodation.
