The latest revised National Statistics on homelessness produced by the Welsh Government were released on 20th June 2012 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority website Statistics on homelessness include data for Wales for the period January to March 2012.

The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 3rd April 2012.

Household acceptances

  • Since the low at the end of 2009, the number of households accepted as homeless has been increasing. Therefore, whilst homelessness acceptances fell by 4 per cent in the January to March 2012 quarter, compared to the same quarter in 2011, for 2011-12 as a whole acceptances continued to increase by 4 per cent to 6,515. However acceptances are still below the peak of 9,855 seen in 2004-05.

Households in Temporary Accommodation

  • In general, the use of temporary accommodation fell between 2005-06 and 2009-10 but has since been increasing. At the end of March 2012 there were 2,770 households in temporary accommodation, up by 5 per cent on March 2011. This is probably due to the increase in the number of acceptances.
  • There were 310 households in bed and breakfast accommodation at the end of March 2012, which is the highest level recorded since 2006-07 and is 31 per cent higher than in March 2011. Of these, 30 households (9 per cent) contained children, which is more than double the number seen at the end of March 2011 and March 2010.
