The latest statistics on Local Authority Education Budgets: Wales and England Comparison produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 27 January 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • Average budgeted spend per pupil on local authority education in Wales in 2009-10 was £5,429, representing an increase of 2.8% on the previous year’s outturn.  This is £527 per pupil lower than in England (£346 excluding London).
  • The overall budget per pupil for England was £5,956 (£5,775 excluding London), representing a rise of 2.4% on the previous year’s outturn.
  • Budgeted spend per head of population in Wales in 2009-10 was £830.  The budget per head for England was £836 (£814 excluding London).
  • 2009-10 pupil numbers fell by 0.5% for Wales and 0.4% for England.
