Reserves Held by Schools, 31 March 2010

Statistics on reserves held by schools include data for Wales for the period 2008-09 and 2009-10.

The key points from the latest release are:

• The overall level of reserves held by schools in Wales was £71 million at 31 March 2010, the equivalent of £157 per pupil.  This is a decrease of 4.4% over the previous year.  Reserves in primary schools accounted for £49 million or 68% of the total.
• The level of reserves as a percentage of delegated schools expenditure was 3.8%, a decrease of 0.3 percentage points over the previous year.
• Isle of Anglesey had the highest level of reserves as a percentage of delegated school expenditure at 8.3% and Wrexham had the lowest at 1.3%.
• At 31 March 2010, 152 primary, 62 secondary and 8 special schools in Wales had negative reserves (i.e. deficits) totalling £13 million.  The remaining 1,562 schools had positive reserves, 329 of which had reserves in excess of 10% of their total delegated expenditure.
