The latest National Statistics on Council tax collection rates in Wales: 2010-11 produced by the Welsh Government were released on 16 June 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website Statistics on Council tax collection rates by Welsh unitary authorities include data on amounts collected, written off and outstanding both for in-year and for previous years. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 10 June 2010.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • In 2010-11, billing authorities collected 96.6% of council tax bills, an increase of 0.2 of a percentage point.
  • 11 authorities recorded a year on year increase in their collection rate in   2010-11.
  • Denbighshire recorded the highest in-year collection rate at 98.2% whilst Cardiff recorded the lowest at 94.5%.
  • The amount actually collected in respect of 2010-11 bills, excluding council tax benefit, was £1,056 million out of £1,094 million collectable.
  • During 2010-11, billing authorities collected £29 million of arrears in respect of previous years and wrote off £6 million as bad debts.
  • At 31 March 2011, £37 million of the amounts billed for in 2010-11 remained outstanding.
  • The total amount outstanding at 31 March 2011 was £81 million.
