The latest statistics on Local Authority Budgeted Expenditure on Schools produced by the Welsh Government were released on 22 June 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

The key points from the latest bulletin are:

  • Total net revenue expenditure for education is budgeted to be £2,171 million, a decrease of 0.4% over the previous year.
  • Gross schools expenditure is budgeted to be £2,475 million, an increase of 0.7% over the previous year.
  • Gross schools expenditure per pupil is budgeted to be £5,462, a year-on-year increase of 1.0% or £53.  This can be broken down into: £4,162 per pupil delegated to schools and £1,299 per pupil retained for centrally funded school services.
  • The funding delegated to schools is budgeted to be £1,886 million.  The amount of funding that local authorities delegate directly to schools ranges between 66% and 84% of overall gross schools budgeted expenditure.
  • 76% of the total gross schools budgeted expenditure is delegated directly to schools.
