The latest National Statistics on Local authority Budgeted Revenue Expenditure produced by the Welsh Government were released on 19 June 2012 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority website Statistics on budgeted revenue expenditure and financing by Welsh authorities include data for police, fire and national park authorities, for 2012-13. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 14 June 2011.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • Total budgeted gross revenue expenditure as reported by Welsh local authorities for 2012-13 is £7.8 billion, an increase of 2.6% on the previous year .
  • County and county borough councils reported increases of 2.8% or £191 million in their gross revenue expenditure whilst police authorities reported an average increase of 0.6%. Fire authorities reported an average increase of 0.5% and national park authorities an increase of 9.9%.
  • Education services accounted for 33% of the total budgeted expenditure and social services 19%.  These two services account for over half of the overall expenditure.
  • Wrexham shows the largest county increase in gross revenue expenditure at 6.3%. Isle of Anglesey shows the only decrease at 0.3%.
  • Net revenue expenditure, i.e. excluding specific and special grants, increased by 1.0% in 2012-13.
