The latest statistics on Local Authority Budgeted Expenditure on Schools produced by the Welsh Government were released on 27 June 2012 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

The key points from the latest bulletin are:

  • Total net revenue expenditure for education is budgeted to be £2,175 million, an increase of 0.2% over the previous year.
  • Gross schools expenditure is budgeted to be £2,495 million, an increase of 1.0% over the previous year.
  • Gross schools expenditure per pupil is budgeted to be £5,520, a year-on-year increase of 1.3% or £69.  This can be broken down into: £4,472 per pupil delegated to schools and £1,049 per pupil retained for centrally funded school services.
  • The funding delegated to schools is budgeted to be £2,021 million.  The amount of funding that local authorities delegate directly to schools ranges between 77% and 84% of overall gross schools budgeted expenditure.
  • 81% of the total gross schools budgeted expenditure is delegated directly to schools, an increase of 4.6 percentage points compared to the previous year.

Revision note

This bulletin has been revised to correct an error in the 2011-12 budget data for 4 local authorities.  This is due to an incorrectly adjusted figure for ‘net schools’ expenditure for these authorities. The data for 2012-13, all headline figures and all other data remain unaffected.
