The latest National Statistics on Local Authority Revenue Outturn Expenditure produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 17 October 2012 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority website Statistics on revenue outturn expenditure and financing by Welsh authorities include data for police, fire and national park authorities, for 2011-12. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 20 October 2011.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • In 2011-12, total gross revenue expenditure as reported by Welsh local authorities, including police, fire and national park authorities, was £7.7 billion, an increase of 1.4% over the previous year.
  • Net revenue expenditure, i.e. excluding specific and special grants, increased by 2% in 2011-12.
  • Education services accounted for 33% of the total gross expenditure, social services 19%, police 8% and fire services 2%.
  • Specific and special government grants totalled £2 billion and accounted for 26% of total gross expenditure in 2011-12.
  • Revenue support grant accounted for 59% of the budget requirement across Wales, with council tax accounting for 23% and redistributed non-domestic rates 14%.  Police grant from the Home Office made up the remaining 4%.
  • Local authorities put £28 million into reserves in 2011-12, a decrease of £108 million over the previous year.
