The latest National Statistics on Council Tax Dwellings in Wales: 2009-10 produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 13 January 2009 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website This release provides details on the number of dwellings liable for council tax in Welsh local authorities for the period 2009-10.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • The total number of dwellings liable for council tax in Wales for 2009-10 is 1,312,825, a rise of 0.3% over the previous year. This total is equivalent to 1,171,541 band D dwellings. Conwy and Bridgend are showing the highest increases at 0.9%.  Four authorities are showing a decrease in band D equivalent dwellings for 2009-10, with Rhondda Cynon Taf having the highest decrease.
  • Blaenau Gwent has the highest proportion of dwellings in bands A and B (85%), Monmouthshire has the lowest (9%).  Rhondda Cynon Taf has the highest number of band A properties (44,194).
  • Around a third of dwellings in Wales receive a 25% discount, generally due to being occupied by only one liable person.
  • There are 48,231 dwellings in Wales that are exempt from council tax, this represents 4% of all dwellings. The largest exempt category being empty and unfurnished 16,263, followed by student dwellings 10,746, with 5,068 dwellings being exempt as a result of being vacant on death.  Repossessions have increased from 540 in 2008-09 to 1,623 in 2009-10.
