The latest National Statistics on Local Authority Capital Expenditure produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 15 October 2009 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website Statistics on capital expenditure include data for unitary, police, fire and national park authorities in Wales for the period 2008-09.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • Capital expenditure for 2008-09 was £1,128 million or £377 per head of population.  This represents a decrease of £17 million or 2% over the previous year. This is the first time that capital expenditure has seen a decrease since 1999 00.
  • Capital receipts for 2008-09 were £63 million.  This represents a decrease of £110 million or 64% over the previous year.  This is the lowest that income from capital receipts has been since local government reorganisation in 1996-97. This is consistent with the current economic climate.
  • The largest service spend was for local environmental services at £372 million (33%), of which planning and sports facilities were the largest elements. The next highest were housing £238 million (21%), transport £231 million (21%) and education £204 million (18%).
  • Police, fire and national park authorities reported expenditure of £37 million, £24 million and £4 million respectively.
