Retained Duty Staff in the Fire and Rescue Service, 2008-09

The latest National Statistics on retained duty staff produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 2 November 2009 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics on retained duty staff include data for Wales for the period 2004 to 2009. This is a new release providing further detail on statistics previously released on 22 January 2009.

Stations

  • In 2008-09 there were 151 Fire and Rescue stations across Wales, of these 101 were fully retained duty stations and 19 were day-crewed.

Personnel

  • There were 1,978 retained duty staff providing 1,578 24 hour units of cover at 31 March 2009

Applications

  • There were 632 applications received in Wales in 2008-09, an increase of 12 per cent since 2007-08.

Leavers

  • During 2008-09, 123 retained duty system staff left the service a decrease of 18 per cent since 2007-08.

Equality and Diversity

  • In 2008-09, 96 per cent of retained duty staff in Wales were men, this varied from 98 per cent in South Wales to 95 per cent in Mid and West Wales.

Health and Safety

  • There were 66 retained duty staff injured during 2008-09 a decrease of 31 per cent since 2007-08.
