The latest statistics on fire and rescue service performance produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 14 October 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics on fire and rescue service performance include data for Wales for the period 2009-10. The latest release updates the statistics previously released by the Local Government Data Unit ~ Wales on 15 October 2009.

Key results for 2009-10 show:

  • There were 19,131 fires attended by the fire and rescue services in Wales, a fall of 2 per cent compared with 2008-09;
  • Over two-thirds of all the fires attended in Wales were started deliberately. This figure of 12,902 deliberate fires has dropped by 5 per cent compared with 2008-09 and by over a third since 2004-05;
  • There were 23 deaths due to fires in Wales; 4 more than in 2008-09;
  • There were 3,473 malicious false alarm calls during the year: this has dropped by 17 per cent compared with 2008-09 and by a third since 2004-05;
  • Over 3.5 per cent of firefighters, both full-time and retained, in March 2010 were women: this number has doubled to 130 since March 2005.
