The latest National Statistics on 2009 Mid-Year Population Estimates produced by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) were released on 24th June 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website Statistics on 2009 mid-year population estimates include data for Wales, England, Scotland and Northern Ireland for the period up to the end of June 2009. The latest release updates the revised mid year estimates for 2002 to 2008 previously released on 13 May 2010.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • As at 30th June 2009 there were 2,999,300 people resident in Wales. This was an increase of 9,200 on mid-2008 (0.3 per cent increase), and was slightly lower than the previous annual increase of 13,900 (0.5 per cent) between mid-2007 and mid-2008.
  • The increase in population in the 12 months between 1st July 2008 and June 30th 2009 was due to:
    - Migration (5,900 more people arriving in Wales than leaving).
    - Natural change (3,300 more births than deaths).
  • There were roughly the same number of children and people aged 65 years and over in Wales as at June 30th 2009:
    - 18.3 per cent of the population were children aged 0 to 15 (550,100 people), compared to 18.5 per cent in mid-2008.
    - 18.3 per cent were people aged 65 years and over (548,300 people), compared to 18.0 per cent in mid-2008.
    - For the UK as a whole as at June 30th 2009, 18.7 per cent were children and 16.4 per cent were people aged 65 years and over.
  • Seven local authorities in Wales experienced a population decline during mid-2008 to mid-2009. The highest population decreases were in Ceredigion (0.5 per cent) and Blaenau Gwent (0.2 per cent).
