Mid-year Estimates of the Population, Revised 2002 to 2010

The 2011 mid-year population estimates for Wales, based on the 2011 Census,  were published on 25 September 2012. The revised estimates for 2002-2010 take into account the additional information provided by the 2011 Census about how the population of Wales has changed over the decade and provides a time-series of population estimates consistent with those for mid-2011.

The key points from the latest release are:

• The population estimate for Wales for mid-2010 has been revised by +43,600 (1.5 per cent).
• At mid-2010 there were 3,049,000 people resident in Wales.  This is more than the original published estimate of 3,006,400.
• Between 2001 and 2010 the total population of Wales increased by 139,800 or 4.8 per cent.
• The revised figures indicate that the population of Wales exceeded 3 million between mid-2006 and mid-2007.
