Mid-year Estimates of the Population, Revised 2002 to 2010

The latest National Statistics on mid-Year Population Estimates (2002 to 2010 revised) produced by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) were released on 13th December 2012 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority website The 2011 mid-year population estimates for Wales, based on the 2011 Census,  were published on 25 September 2012. The revised estimates for 2002-2010 take into account the additional information provided by the 2011 Census about how the population of Wales has changed over the decade and provides a time-series of population estimates consistent with those for mid-2011.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • The population estimate for Wales for mid-2010 has been revised by +43,600 (1.5 per cent).
  • At mid-2010 there were 3,049,000 people resident in Wales.  This is more than the original published estimate of 3,006,400.
  • Between 2001 and 2010 the total population of Wales increased by 139,800 or 4.8 per cent.
  • The revised figures indicate that the population of Wales exceeded 3 million between mid-2006 and mid-2007.
