This Statistical Bulletin contains a summary of information on Adult Continuing Education collected by the National Council - ELWa. Prior to April 2001, the National Assembly collected data on Adult Continuing Education and this is the first Statistical Bulletin based on the new data collection.
 As such it contains data for two academic years, but they are not comparable with previous years.

The Bulletin includes the following key results:

  • There were over 16,300 enrolments on maintained courses in 2002/03 compared with nearly 18,600 enrolments in 2001/02 (a fall of 12 per cent).
  • In addition to LEAs providing courses on behalf of NC-ELWa at their own centres, there were a further 39,400 enrolments in 2002/03 (40,100 in 2001/02) on courses provided under contracted out, contracted in or assisted arrangements.
  • In 2002/03, there were 260 venues in Wales at which maintained courses in adult education were held, a fall from 289 in 2001/02.
  • In both 2002/03 and 2001/02 the highest number of maintained enrolments in Wales was in Cardiff with almost 6,200 (38 per cent of the total Wales figure) in 2002/03 and almost 7,000 (38 per cent) in 2001/02.
