The latest National Statistics on learner numbers in post-16 education and training for the academic year 2007/08 produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 30 April 2009 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website The statistics on learner numbers in post-16 education and training include data for Wales for the period August 2007 to July 2008.  The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 27 November 2008.

This Statistical First Release summarises final data on learners in post-16 education and training excluding those at Higher Education institutions and schools but including Further Education institutions, other Work-based Learning providers and Community Learning provision collected via the Welsh Assembly Government’s Lifelong Learning Wales Record (LLWR).

Key points from the latest release are:

  • The figures show a decline in full year learner numbers across all sectors (FE institutions, LEA community learning and work-based learning provision) between 2006/07 and 2007/08, though year end figures have increased for some types of learning programme.
  • There were 274,960 learners at FE Institutions, Community Learning or Work-based Learning providers during 2007/08, a reduction of 7.7 per cent on 2006/07 or of 5.5 per cent allowing for changes in ‘Welsh for Adults’ data collection processes.
  • Males outnumbered females for all ages below 20.  However the number of females aged 20 or above was 63 per cent higher than the equivalent number of males.
  • Of learning activities for which the qualification level was know, the proportion pursued at level 1 fell from 33 per cent to 31 per cent whereas the proportion at level 3 rose slightly from 18 per cent to 19 per cent.
