The latest statistical bulletin on Welsh in Higher Education produced by the Welsh Assembly Government was released on 30 June 2009 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website This Bulletin provides information about students enrolled at Welsh higher education institutions (HEIs) taught through the medium of Welsh and staff teaching through the medium of Welsh up to the 2007/08 academic year. The bulletin updates the statistics previously released on 17 June 2008.  The data included here are taken from the Higher Education Statistics Agency’s (HESA) Student and Staff Records.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • There were 4,445 student enrolments at Welsh HEIs with some teaching through the medium of Welsh, 9.1 per cent greater than the number in 2006/07 (4,075).
  • 3.5 per cent of student enrolments at Welsh HEIs had some teaching through the medium of Welsh, compared with 3.2 per cent in 2006/07.
  • In 2007/08 there were 4,050 Welsh domiciled students at Welsh HEIs with some teaching through the medium of Welsh, an increase of 7.9 per cent compared with 2006/07 (3,755).
  • There were 620 academic staff able to teach through the medium of Welsh and 390 academic staff teaching through the medium of Welsh.
