Student Support for Higher Education, 2009/10 (Provisional)

The latest National Statistics on Student Support for Higher Education in Wales produced by the Student Loans Company (SLC) were released on 25 November 2009 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.
UK Statistics Authority Website Statistics on student support for Higher Education in Wales include provisional data on all Welsh domiciled students and those EU students studying in Wales for academic year 2009/10 along with data for previous years. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 27 November 2008.

The key results for 2009/10 (provisional) are:

  • By mid-November 2009, 50,500 students had successfully applied for support under the 2006/07 entry regulations.  34 per cent received a full Assembly Learning Grant, 25 per cent received a partial ALG and 40 per cent received no ALG.
  • 44,400 Welsh domiciled students and EU Students studying in Wales, applying under the 2006/07 entry regulations have taken out a Tuition Fee Loan at an average rate of £1,820 per student (£1,260 for those studying in Wales and £3,110 for those studying in England).
  • • By mid-November 2009, the number of students qualifying under the 2006/07 regulations for the new tuition fee grant in 2009/10 was 36,600(r) at an average rate of £1,890 per student. 
  • The provisional average income contingent maintenance loan for those who have applied so far in 2009/10 is £3,500.

The key results for 2008/09 are:

  • The number of student support scheme students receiving support in Wales was 53,000(r) in 2008/09.
  • The average income contingent maintenance loan was £3,410 in 2008/09. The average loan for those who entered from 2006/07 was £3,380.
  • 36,500 Welsh domiciled students and EU Students studying in Wales, applying under the 2006/07 entry regulations took out a Tuition Fee Loan at an average of £1,780 per student (£1,230 for those studying in Wales and £3,010 for those studying in England).
  • 33,600(r) students qualified under the 2006/07 regulations for the new tuition fee grant in 2008/09 at an average of £1,820 per student.
