Higher Education Student Enrolments and Qualifications Obtained at Higher Education Institutions in the UK, 2008/09

The latest National Statistics on ‘Higher Education Student Enrolments and Qualifications Obtained at Higher Education Institutions in the United Kingdom for the Academic Year 2008/09’ produced by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) were released on 14 January 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Enrolments

  • The total number of HE enrolments at UK HEIs was 2,396,055, showing an increase of 4 per cent from 2007/08.
  • The number of HE enrolments at Welsh HEIs was 126,475, an increase of 1 per cent.
  • Full-time enrolments increased by 4 per cent and part-time enrolments decreased by 4 per cent.
  • At Welsh HEIs there were 65,555 first year enrolments, an increase of 3 per cent.
  • Full-time first year enrolments at Welsh HEIs increased by 5 per cent, and part-time first year enrolments showed no percentage change.

Qualifications Obtained

  • At UK HEIs there were 333,720 first degree graduates (no percentage change on 2007/08).
  • At Welsh HEIs there were 18,430 first degree graduates (A decrease of 2 per cent on 2007/08).
