The latest National Statistics on Initial Teacher Training in Wales produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 19 March 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 26 March 2009. This bulletin is based on statistics produced by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA).

Each year the Welsh Assembly Government sets intake targets for recruitment to ITT courses in Wales. In 2008/09 the targets were reduced to 900 enrolments for Primary and 1,175 for secondary.

2008/09 summary

  • The number of first year enrolments on ITT courses (2,035) was 3 per cent lower than the previous year and is at its lowest level in the last 10 years.
  • 80 per cent of first year students on ITT courses in Wales were Welsh domiciled.
  • First year enrolments on both Primary and Secondary phase courses fell; Primary by 4 per cent and Secondary by 3 per cent.
  • The number of students completing ITT courses was 3 per cent more than the number in 2007/08.

Data on Destinations of Students Completing ITT Courses in Wales, 2008/09, will be published in a supplementary headline statistics in July 2010.

Data on destinations of students completing ITT courses in Wales for 2007/08 were published in September 2009.
