The latest statistics on Financial Contingency Funds produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 29 April 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

This Statistical Bulletin presents information on the number of awards from Financial Contingency Funds (FCFs) for students at both higher and further education institutions for the academic year 2008/09. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 28 April 2009.

Higher Education

  • The number of applications for financial assistance from Financial Contingency Funds fell by 10 per cent to 9,670 compared with the previous year. The number of successful applications also fell to 7,840 (18 per cent decrease) compared with the previous year.
  • £4.7m was awarded to students in 2008/09. The total allocated to institutions was £4.8m.
  • 32 per cent of successful applications were from students aged under 21, and 32 per cent were from those aged between 21 and 24.

Further Education

  • There were 21,240 applications for financial assistance from Financial Contingency Funds, an increase of 5 per cent compared with 2007/08. Of these applications, 19,690 were successful, an increase of 5 per cent on the 2007/08 figure.
  • 23,920 individual awards were funded, totalling £6.3m, a fall in expenditure of 10 per cent(r). The total amount distributed to institutions was £6.5m in 2008/09, a 7 per cent (r) decrease from 2007/08.
  • 56 per cent(r) of awards were to students aged between 16 and 18.
