The latest statistical bulletin on Welsh in Higher Education produced by the Welsh Assembly Government was released on 29 July 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website This Bulletin provides information about students enrolled at Welsh higher education institutions (HEIs) taught through the medium of Welsh and staff teaching through the medium of Welsh up to the 2008/09 academic year. The bulletin updates the statistics previously released on 30 June 2009.  The data included here are taken from the Higher Education Statistics Agency’s (HESA) Student and Staff Records.

2008/09 Summary

  • There were 5,330 student enrolments at Welsh HEIs with some teaching through the medium of Welsh, 19.9 per cent greater than the number in 2007/08 (4,445).
  • 4.2 per cent of student enrolments at Welsh HEIs had some teaching through the medium of Welsh, compared with 3.5 per cent in 2007/08.
  • In 2008/09 there were 4,710 Welsh domiciled students at Welsh HEIs with some teaching through the medium of Welsh, an increase of 16.3 per cent compared with 2007/08 (4,050).
  • There were 665 academic staff able to teach through the medium of Welsh and 455 academic staff teaching through the medium of Welsh.
