The latest statistics on staff at Further Education Institutions in Wales produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 26 August 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics on staff at Further Education Institutions were collected from the institutions by the Department for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills (DCELLS) via the Staff Individualised Record (SIR), and include data for Wales for the period 2008/09.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • 13,565 members of staff, comprising 6,030 full-time and 7,535 part-time staff, were directly employed by FE institutions during 2008/09.
  • The full-time and part-time staff numbers amounted to 9,065 full-time equivalents (FTEs).
  • There were 16,810 individual staff contracts in 2008/09, of which 9,055 were for teaching staff and 7,760 for ‘other’ staff.
  • Over 60 per cent of staff directly employed by FE institutions were female.
  • The overall number of staff directly employed by FE institutions in Wales fell by almost 2 per cent between 2007/08 and 2008/09, continuing a downward trend since the peak in staff numbers in 2002/03.
  • At an institutional level, year on year changes in staff numbers varied across FE institutions with just over half experiencing a decrease in staff numbers compared to 2007/08.

The data collection for this release is suspended for 2009/10, subject to a review. The ‘Staff at Further Education Institutions in Wales, 2009/10’ full release will be replaced by a shortened version giving FTE trends using data from the Finance Record Head in lieu of 2009/10 SIR data.
