National Statistics on post-16 education and training produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 21 October 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website The statistics comprise a reference volume for Further Education, work-based learning and local authority community learning in Wales, primarily covering the period August 2008 to July 2009.

Key points from the volume include:

  • 192,770 learners were enrolled at FE institutions during 2008/09, 6.7 per cent fewer than in 2007/08.
  • There was a 16 per cent decrease in FE learner numbers in total at Further and Higher Education institutions between December 2002 and December 2008.
  • 90 per cent of learning activities at FEIs were completed and 85 per cent of the completed activities with an assessable outcome were attained.
  • 43,485 learners pursued a Local Authority Community Learning activity in 2008/09 (including those enrolled at FEIs but taught by local authority staff), 1.5 per cent fewer than in the previous year.
  • 56,550 learners undertook work-based learning programmes at FEIs and other training providers in 2008/09, 1.7 per cent fewer than in 2007/08.
  • 66 per cent of learners leaving their most recent work-based learning programme in 2008/09 went into current or new employment.
