The latest National Statistics on Initial Teacher Training in Wales produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 16th March 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 19 March 2010. This bulletin is based on statistics produced by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA).

Each year the Welsh Assembly Government sets intake targets for recruitment to ITT courses in Wales. In 2009/10 the targets were reduced to 775 enrolments for Primary and 1,100 for secondary.

2009/10 summary

  • The number of first year enrolments on ITT courses (1,940) was 5 per cent lower than the previous year and 20 per cent lower than five years ago.
  • 80 per cent of first year students on ITT courses in Wales were Welsh domiciled.
  • First year enrolments on Primary phase courses fell by 12 per cent, whilst first year enrolments on secondary courses increased by 2 per cent.
  • The number of students completing ITT courses was 11 per cent lower than the number in 2008/09.

Data on Destinations of Students Completing ITT Courses in Wales, 2009/10, will be published in a supplementary statistical headline in July 2011.

Data on destinations of students completing ITT courses in Wales for 2008/009 were published in September 2010.

Revision note

The revisions to the release affect tables A.6 and C.3 and associated commentary about students completing ITT courses.  Please refer to sub-section 6 (Revisions) in the Notes section of the release for an explanation of the changes. It includes a table showing the differences between the originally published and revised figures.
