Further Education, Work-based Learning and Community Learning in Wales Statistics, 2009/10

National Statistics on post-16 education and training produced by the Welsh Government were released on 22 September 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website The statistics comprise a reference volume for Further Education, work-based learning and local authority community learning in Wales, primarily covering the period August 2009 to July 2010.

Key points from the volume include:

  • 184,730 learners were enrolled at FE institutions during 2009/10, 4.2 per cent fewer than in 2008/09.
  • There was a 21 per cent decrease in FE learner numbers in total at Further and Higher Education institutions between December 2003 and December 2009.
  • 90 per cent of learning activities at FEIs were completed and 89 per cent of the completed activities with an assessable outcome were attained.
  • 39,605 learners pursued a Local Authority Community Learning activity in 2009/10 (including those enrolled at FEIs but taught by local authority staff), 8.9 per cent fewer than in the previous year.
  • 57,605 learners were engaged in work-based learning provision at FEIs and other training providers in 2009/10, 1.9 per cent more than in 2008/09.
  • 64.5 per cent of learners leaving their most recent work-based learning programme in 2009/10 went into current or new employment.
