The latest National Statistics on teachers produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 19 June 2008 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority website Statistics on teachers in service, vacancies and sickness absence include data for Wales for the period as at January 2008. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 29 August 2008.

The key points from the latest release are:

Teachers in service with LEAs:

  • There were 29,056 full-time equivalent (FTE) teachers employed by LEAs, a decrease of 142 since January 2007.

Teacher vacancies:

  • There were no vacancies in nursery schools, 45 in primary schools and 49 in secondary schools.
    The total vacancy rate was 0.3 per cent, down from 0.5 per cent in January  2007.

Teacher sickness absence:

  • 65 per cent of teachers in maintained schools took a period of sickness absence during 2007, up from 62% in 2006.
  • The total number of days sickness absence taken increased by over 7%.
