The latest National Statistics on class sizes in primary schools produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 26 November 2008 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

The key points from the latest release are:

Infant classes

  • 68 classes with more than 30 pupils, compared to 51 classes in September 2007.
  • 53 of the 68 classes have more than 30 pupils due to permissible exceptions.
  • 2.3 per cent of pupils (2,164) in classes of over 30, compared to 1.7 per cent in 2007.
  • Excluding classes with permissible exceptions, 0.5 per cent of pupils (500) are in classes of more than 30 pupils, in September 2007 the figure was 0.1 per cent. In 1999, 8.6 per cent of pupils were in classes of over 30 pupils.

Junior classes

  • 194 classes with more than 30 pupils, compared to 162 classes in September 2007.
  • 120 of the 194 classes have more than 30 pupils due to permissible exceptions.
  • 4.7 per cent (6,140) of pupils in classes of over 30, compared to 3.8 per cent of pupils in September 2007.
  • Excluding classes with permissible exceptions, 1.9 per cent of pupils (2,354) are in classes of more than 30 pupils, compared to 1.6 per cent (2,140) in September 2007. In 1999, 21.4 per cent of pupils were in classes of over 30 pupils.
