The latest National Statistics on School Statistics by Assembly Constituency and Region produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 29th January 2009 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics include a variety of school and attainment indicators split by Assembly constituencies and regions as at the 2007 Assembly elections for the 2007/08 academic year. The latest bulletin updates the statistics previously released on 21st May 2008.

The key points from the latest bulletin are:

  • Montgomeryshire was the constituency with the lowest percentage of pupils of compulsory school age entitled to free school meals at 9.4, whilst Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney, had the highest percentage at 25.9.
  • Dwyfor Meirionnydd was the constituency where the highest percentage of pupils considered themselves to be from a white ethnic background, 99.2 per cent.  Cardiff Central had the highest percentage of pupils from an ethnic background other than white, 76.1 per cent white and 23.9 per cent from another ethnic background.
  • The percentage of half day sessions missed through overall absenteeism by pupils of compulsory secondary school age was highest in Cardiff South and Penarth (11.2) and lowest in Gower (7.1).
  • The constituency with the highest percentage of pupils achieving the Core Subject Indicator at Key Stage 2 was Cardiff North, 83.0 per cent. The lowest percentage was at Swansea East with 66.1 per cent.
  • Gower had the highest percentage of pupils achieving the Level 2 threshold, 69.5, whilst Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney was the constituency with the lowest percentage at 44.3.
