The latest statistics on exclusions from schools in Wales produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 30 March 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics on exclusions from schools in Wales include data for Wales for the past ten academic years, from 1999/00 to 2008/09, and for England, Northern Ireland and Scotland for the academic year 2007/08.  The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 31 March 2009.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • In 2008/09 there were 213 permanent exclusions, a decrease from 241 in 2007/08;
  • The highest rate of permanent exclusions from maintained secondary schools, 2.2 exclusions per 1,000 pupils, was seen in Cardiff (with 45 permanent exclusions); Isle of Anglesey, Pembrokeshire and The Vale of Glamorgan reported no permanent exclusions;
  • 23 per cent of those permanently excluded were provided with home tuition as the alternative provision and 23 per cent were transferred to another mainstream school;
  • The total number of fixed-term exclusions has fallen slightly to 19,034.
