The latest National Statistics on Examination Performance produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 25 May 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website This provides a detailed analysis of last year’s Key Stage assessments and GCSE/A level results.  Much of the information has already been published in previous statistical volumes.  This publication brings the information together as a comprehensive summary of examination performance in Wales.

The hard copy of the publication is no longer produced, however all data continues to be available as EXCEL spreadsheets and the range of school performance information available on our interactive data analysis tool StatsWales will be expanded over the Summer.  This Statistical First Release presents a selection of that information.

The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 7 May 2009.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • At Key Stage 1 in 2009, the percentage of pupils achieving at least the expected level in teacher assessments was higher for all subjects when compared with 2008.
  • At Key Stage 2 in 2009, the percentage of pupils achieving at least the expected level in teacher assessments was higher for all subjects than in 2008, and at least 10 percentage points higher than in 1999.
  • At Key Stage 3 in 2009, the percentage of pupils achieving at least the expected level in teacher assessments was higher for all subjects when compared with 2008.
  • 61 per cent of pupils aged 15 achieved the level 2 threshold in 2009, 3 percentage points higher than in 2008.  66 per cent of girls and 55 per cent of boys achieved this level.
  • 11,367 17-year-old pupils entered a volume equivalent to 2 A levels in 2009, around 420 more than in 2008.
