Schools Census, 2010 (provisional)

Statistics on schools, teachers and pupils include data for Wales at January 2010. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 29th October 2009.

The key points from the latest release (compared to January 2009) are:

• 20 less local authority (LA) maintained schools and 2,500 fewer pupils;
• 4 more independent schools
• 275 less teachers (full time equivalent) in the LA maintained sector;
• 1,316 additional support staff (the majority recruited in foundation phase settings);
• pupil-teacher ratio is 17.6 (up from 17.5 in 2009)

In 2010, data on ethnic background and national identity showed that:

• almost 92 per cent of pupils aged 5+ consider themselves to be of white ethnic background;
