The latest National Statistics on Pupils with Statements of Special Educational Needs produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 16 June 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website Statistics on Pupils with Statements of Special Educational Needs include data at Local Authority and Wales level as at January 2010. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 17 June 2009.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • The number of pupils with a statement of Special Educational Needs decreased by 3.4 per cent during 2009, bringing the total number with a statement to 14,327 at January 2010.
  • 1,340 pupils were newly assessed during 2009 as requiring a statement, compared to 1,542 in the previous year.
  • Over 91 per cent (13,079 pupils) of the total pupils with statements at January 2010 were educated within their “home” local authority rather than in other authorities.
