The latest National Statistics on teachers produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 17 June 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website Statistics on teachers in service, vacancies and sickness absence include data for Wales for the period as at January 2010. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 18 June 2009.

Teachers in service with local authorities LAs:

  • There were 28,084 full-time equivalent (FTE) teachers employed by LAs, a decrease of 333 since January 2009.

Teacher vacancies:

  • The total number of teacher vacancies in nursery, primary and secondary schools was 78. In nursery schools there was 1 vacancy, 44 in primary schools and 33 in secondary schools. 
    The total vacancy rate was 0.3 per cent, down from 0.4 per cent in January 2009.

Teacher sickness absence:

  • 62 per cent of teachers in maintained schools took a period of sickness absence during 2009, down from 64 per cent during 2008.
  • The total number of days sickness absence taken decreased by almost 7 per cent, to almost 236,200 days.
