The latest National Statistics on ‘Assessment and Examination Performance in Wales: Comparison with England and its Regions, 2009’ produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 29 June 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website Statistics on ‘Assessment and Examination Performance in Wales: Comparison with England and its Regions, 2009’ include data for England and Wales for the period covering the 2008/09 academic year.  The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 25 June 2009.

This year we are not including a comparison of Key Stage 4 exam results between Wales and England. The Department for Education in England now only report on the number of pupils at the end of Key Stage 4 whilst we continue to report on the number of pupils who were aged 15 as at 31 August prior to the start of the academic year. Therefore the data are no longer comparable. We are looking at the feasibility of producing estimates for Wales at the end of Key Stage 4 which would be comparable to those now published for England.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • Key Stage 1: The proportion of pupils in Wales achieving the expected level was slightly lower than in England for all subjects apart from Science, where the average for Wales was slightly higher.
  • Key Stage 2: Pupils in Wales performed better than their counterparts in England in English and Mathematics and performed the same in Science.
  • Key Stage 3: The proportion of pupils in Wales achieving the expected level was lower than England.
