The latest National Statistics on pupils educated other than at school (EOTAS) in Wales produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 13 January 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics on Pupils Educated Other than at School, 2009/10 (Experimental Statistics) are based upon data relating to pupils known by Local Authorities to be only receiving education outside of school during the academic week from 11 to 15 January 2010.  This is a new experimental statistics release.

In 2009/10

  • 995 pupils were recorded as being educated other than at school; 222 of these pupils were also on roll at a maintained school;
  • Around three quarters of EOTAS pupils were boys;
  • The largest age group was 15-year-olds, with over 40 per cent of EOTAS pupils being of this age;
  • The most frequently used form of educational provision for EOTAS pupils was being taught at a Pupil Referral Unit, accounting for almost half of enrolments;
  • More than 80 per cent of EOTAS pupils were recorded as having special educational needs.
  • 747 pupils were reported to be educated at home (these are not included in the number of EOTAS pupils listed above).
