The latest National Statistics on the Annual Schools Census produced by the Welsh Government were released on 6 September 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website Statistics on schools, teachers and pupils include data for Local Authorities and Wales at January 2011. The latest release updates the provisional statistics previously released on 6 July 2011.

The key points from the latest release (compared to January 2010) are:

  • 30 less local authority (LA) maintained schools and 969 fewer pupils;
  • 2 more independent schools;
  • 432.2 fewer teachers (full-time equivalent) in the LA maintained sector;
  • 910.9 additional (full-time equivalent) support staff;
  • pupil-teacher ratio in the LA maintained sector is 18.2 (up from 18.0 in 2010).

In 2011, data on ethnic background and national identity showed that:

  • almost 92 per cent of pupils aged 5 and over consider themselves to be of white ethnic background.

Revision note

The free school meals data in table 11 of the release and accompanying Excel tables 1.16, 9.2, 9.3, 9.4, 11.33 and 11.34 were revised on 13 December 2011. See Notes, section 5.2 of the release for further information.

In addition, Excel tables 5.14 and 5.15 containing data on number of years experience of teachers leaving the profession were revised on 13 February 2012. This was due to an error which originally showed data for all leavers, rather than only those who had left for 'employment outside teaching or early retirement' as in previous years.
