The latest National Statistics on absenteeism from secondary schools in Wales produced by the Welsh Government were released on 6 September 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website Statistics on Absenteeism from Secondary Schools in Wales, 2010/11 relate to the period September to May for the academic years 2001/02 to 2010/11.  The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 8 September 2010.

In 2010/11

  • 8.6 per cent of half-day sessions were missed through authorised and unauthorised absence, a decrease of 0.3 percentage points from 2009/10.
  • 1.5 per cent of half-day sessions were missed through unauthorised absence, a small decrease from 2009/10.
  • A little over 7,000 pupils (4.1 per cent) had no absence from maintained secondary schools.
  • Just under one fifth of pupils account for over half the total number of absent sessions.
