The latest National Statistics on absenteeism from secondary schools in Wales produced by the Welsh Government were released on 25 September 2012 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority website Statistics on Absenteeism from Secondary Schools in Wales, 2011/12 relate to the period September to May for the academic years 2002/03 to 2011/12.  The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 6 September 2011.

In 2011/12,

  • 7.8 per cent of half-day sessions were missed through authorised and unauthorised absence, a decrease of 0.8 percentage points from 2010/11.
  • 1.4 per cent of half-day sessions were missed through unauthorised absence, a small decrease from 2010/11;
  • The proportion of pupils absent for 20.5 days or more fell from 19.3 per cent in 2010/11 to 16.3 per cent.  The percentage of pupils with no absence increased to 5.4 per cent;
  • Illness accounted for more than 50 per cent of absent sessions from maintained schools.
