The latest National Statistics produced by the Welsh Government were released on 30 January 2013 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics include a variety of school and attainment indicators split by Assembly constituencies and regions used for the 2010 Assembly elections, for the 2011/12 academic year. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 25 January 2012.

Schools and Pupils

  • the number of full-time equivalent (FTE) pupils in each constituency ranged between 7,297.5 in Dwyfor Meirionnydd, to 17,496.5 in Cardiff West
  • the lowest average class sizes in primary school Foundation Phase classes were in the constituency of Ceredigion with 21.1 pupils and the lowest average Key Stage 2 classes were in the constituency of Dwyfor Meirionnydd with 20.1
  • the largest average Foundation phase classes were in Bridgend and Wrexham with 27.9 pupils each, the largest average Key Stage 2 classes were in Torfaen with 28.2 pupils
  • Ceredigion had the lowest primary pupil teacher ratio at 17.1, and Pontypridd had the highest at 23.8.  The lowest secondary pupil teacher ratio was in Ceredigion at 14.9, and the highest was in Caerphilly at 18.4
  • Brecon and Radnorshire had the lowest percentage of pupils of compulsory school age entitled to free school meals at 10.7 per cent, whilst Aberavon had the highest percentage at 29.2 per cent

Absenteeism

  • the percentage of half day sessions missed through overall absenteeism by pupils of compulsory school age in primary schools was highest in Swansea East (7.7 per cent) and lowest in Clwyd West, Ceredigion and Monmouth (5.1 per cent)
  • the percentage of half day sessions missed through overall absenteeism by pupils of compulsory school age in secondary schools was highest in Rhondda (10.1 per cent) and lowest in Cardiff Central (5.9 per cent)

Educational Attainment

  • the constituency with the highest percentage of pupils achieving the Core Subject Indicator at Key Stage 2 was at Gower (88.3 per cent), and the lowest percentage was at Cynon Valley (76.5 per cent)
  • Gower had the highest percentage of pupils achieving the Level 2 threshold including a GCSE grade A*-C in English or Welsh First Language and Mathematics, at 67.6 per cent, whilst Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney was the constituency with the lowest percentage at 33.1 per cent
