The latest National Statistics on Volunteering in Wales, produced by the Welsh Assembly Government, were released on 25 November 2008 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority website Statistics on Volunteering in Wales include data taken from the 2007 Living in Wales survey, which is an annual Welsh household survey.

The key points from the bulletin are:

  • During the 3 years before the 2007 survey, a quarter of respondents had volunteered.
  • The most popular category to volunteer for was 'Friends, relatives or other members of the community' with 40% of volunteers over the last 3 years.
  • Over half (52%) of those who had volunteered over the last 3 years and knew how often they had done so in the last 12 months, did so 'at least once a week'.
  • Around 1 in 5 respondents (21%) stated that they would like to spend more time helping groups, clubs or organisations. Older respondents were less likely to say this - 6% of respondents aged 70 or over compared to 31% of respondents aged under 30.
