The latest National Statistics on Child Poverty indicators produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 24 November 2009 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website Statistics on indicators monitoring progress against the Child Poverty Strategy include data for Wales for the period up to early November 2009.

The key points from the release are:

  • Of the 31 child poverty indicators, just over two thirds have sufficient data to allow an assessment (i.e. both a baseline and at least one later figure);
  • Of the indicators that have been assessed, half of the indicators show a clear improvement, one indicator shows a clear deterioration, whilst the rest show little change;
  • Since 2008, two of the indicators which had insufficient data now have sufficient data to be measured. Of these one showed little change, whilst the other showed a clear deterioration.
  • Of the indicators that were assessed in 2008, only one has changed colour, moving from amber to green.

The full set of data and notes on all of the indicators will be available through our StatsWales website which the user can manipulate or download. The indicators are presented in Child Poverty Online Report (external link) which is linked to the data tables and this will be updated in early in 2010; this will be announced on the Due Out Soon page.

Child Poverty Indicators 1, 2, 12, 14 and 15 which are in this bulletin are in the process of being re-calculated by NPHS using the Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation instead of Townsend scores. As this will be new data, it is the intention that a First Release will be issued by the Statistical Directorate in early 2010 that will revise this Bulletin.

A summary of progress against the Child Poverty Strategy can be found in the Children and Young People's Well-being Monitor for Wales.
