The latest National Statistics on ‘Welsh Transport Statistics’ produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were published on 30 June 2009 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

The Release

  • The total road length in Wales in 2008 was 34,164 km, an increase of 53 km from the previous year. This is mainly due to an increase in the length of minor surfaced roads.
  • There were around 118,000 new vehicle registrations in Wales during 2007.
  • 78 per cent of households in Wales had access to a motor vehicle in 2006.
  • There were an estimated 122 million passenger journeys on local bus services in 2007-08.
  • There were approximately 21.9 million rail passenger journeys which either started or ended in Wales in 2006-07, an increase of 9 per cent compared to the previous year. Around two-thirds (67 per cent) of these journeys were within Wales.
  • In 2007, there were 8,956 ship arrivals in Wales, 1 per cent more than in 2006.
  • In 2007 there were around 44,000 aircraft movements at Cardiff International Airport, 5 per cent more than in 2006.
  • The total forecasted outturn of direct central government expenditure in 2008-09 was 386.3 million, of which, rail franchise and rail service support accounted for 42 per cent.
